Plastic surgeons have suggested the first "breakthrough" surgery for babies born with a birth defect that means they have a cleft palate.
A recent study in the US has shown the novel technique of using a syringe to pull the lip and palate back together works in babies with the condition.
It is the first time the approach has been used in children, and the results were promising.
Researchers have now started a clinical trial in the UK to test whether it is safe.
It is estimated that in the UK about one in 600 babies have some form of cleft and about 100,000 are born with the condition each year.
The most common form is a cleft lip and palate - in which the lip and the roof of the mouth are joined together.
In most cases the condition can be corrected during the first few months of life through surgery, known as a primary palate repair.
But not all clefts affect the same part of the mouth and some children are born with a gap between their palate and their nose.
The new approach suggested by researchers at the University of Iowa works by trying to pull the lips and palate back together using a syringe.
They have already tested it on 20 babies, all of whom survived. The procedure - known as autologous periosteum grafting - has now been used on children in the UK.
Researchers plan to do the surgery on children with a cleft that affects their lip or palate before they turn six months old.
Mick Shooshan, a surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, said: "This is exciting and we are now hoping to move forward with the first trial in the UK.
"It is highly complex and very delicate work, so we will have to ensure we give it a robust trial."
Lead researcher Dr Dave Smooke, from the university, said: "When you think of the skills needed to perform this surgery, the 0b46394aab
