The film follows a mercenary in a quest to find a fabled lost city described in numerous myths and lore.[1] The journey unfolds in a series of vignettes that parallel the five levels of Maya consciousness (or the five senses — sound, hear; smell, smell; touch, touch; taste, taste; sight, sight). The protagonist (Youngblood) and other recurring characters are depicted in different archetypes corresponding to the visual senses: Jaguar Paw is shown as a hulking, hairy, tree-climbing scratch-and-claw animal, while the Mayan men and women are anthropomorphized, with round faces and exaggerated gestures. These are shown in the film as a way to depict the Mayan ways of thinking – to see all men and women as equals and to speak to the listener directly through visual imagery, rather than with language — something that the present-day Western way of speaking is unable to do.

The film's screenplay, which was written by Gibson and Michael Cooney, drew from four books written by Mexican Mayan author Sergio Cabañas (author of Venas de Cera, "Wax of Rebirth", and many other books):

The film is structured as three short vignettes, each following an eponymous character through time. Each section culminates in an out-of-place fragmentary shot of a headstone in an unknown location, ominously hinting at the destiny of the characters involved in the story.
