Cuomo confirmed in August 2016 that he had begun work on a followup to Alone II, tentatively titled "Alone III", to be released in 2017, and said that he had demo compilations available online. However, he later clarified that it was more likely to be a collection of demos never officially released, possibly in between or after the more well-known Buddyhead albums. Cuomo stated that he wanted to make the demos accessible to people with not enough money to buy or loan an album, saying, "I think for me it started off as something to sell to people who actually couldn't afford a record, you know? And then people started finding it and falling in love with it, and it ended up being this whole thing." On May 17, 2018, Cuomo began releasing demos titled The Grocery via the aforementioned Weezify app, accompanied with a music video.
In a September 2018 podcast recorded before his show at The Roxy, Cuomo said that he has plans for a third part of the Alone series. He further discussed how the series was marketed, and revealed that the number of sets sold out for the Alone II compilation was in the tens of thousands. He said that there will be a fourth, fifth, and sixth compilation, presumably in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Weezer album, the 1994 release of Beauty & The Beat, in 2021. He said the first four were sold out within hours of being made available for pre-order, by which time they had sold out, and that the sales increased from there for each successive iteration.
Cuomo had written and recorded different versions of the song "Hertzian Tears" earlier on in his career (some in the style of Nine Inch Nails), but put them away so he wouldn't put out any of them. On his iPod, Cuomo says that he has trouble deciding which version to release because each time he listens to it, it becomes a new song, which is the way he likes his music. The song has never been officially released by Weezer. d2c66b5586
