This book acknowledges the need to help those people affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by reducing their symptoms and change their lives and suggest possible treatments on how to cope with this disorder.
Traumatic events are much more than bad events. They are real, pervasive physical, psychological, and social experiences in which an individual's beliefs and perceptions about the world are activated, creating meaning systems and physical responses or mental images. If a person becomes locked into an immobile mental view of self and the world, their sense of self as transformable and changeable will be diminished. They will be lost in their perceptions and trapped in their history. If they are unable to find a way into an alternative mental view, they will have a sense of unreality, not being able to connect with this perceived world.
People affected by trauma often have a body that is hypersensitive in response to threat and trauma. Symptoms can be physical (aches, headaches, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headaches, insomnia, and loss of interest in sex), psychological (anxiety, depression, shame, anger), or social (addiction to alcohol or drugs). The brain becomes hyper vigilant, noticing everything and interpreting as a stressor. The stress response is activated in the body. These physical changes are all symptoms of a stress response and the brain directs the body to send a signal to the adrenal glands to release the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. This state of heightened physiological arousal makes recovery difficult because this is when the body is most vulnerable to disease as it is not able to prepare or recover fully from the stressor.
When a person goes through trauma, often the immediate reaction is frozen in fear with a feeling of hopelessness, sadness, anger, guilt, and worry even though they have survived and the danger may now be over. This is due to the trauma system being in overdrive and being on the alert. They see the world in terms of the danger. d2c66b5586
