The research team were able to identify trophy hunters based on what was known about the hunting companies and the type of trophies they hunted. The team travelled to the area being hunted and interviewed the trophy hunters present. Eleven trophy hunters were identified as being involved in lion hunts. Four trophy hunters were identified as being involved in white rhino hunts, four trophy hunters were identified as being involved in elephant hunts, two trophy hunters were identified as being involved in kudu hunts, three trophy hunters were identified as being involved in hippo hunts and one trophy hunter was identified as being involved in a crocodile hunt.
Two of the lion trophy hunters were introduced to trophy hunting by an older hunter who had been involved in lion hunts for over 20 years. One of the lion trophy hunters had been introduced to trophy hunting by a younger hunter who had been involved in lion hunts for approximately 10 years. Two of the lion trophy hunters had been introduced to trophy hunting by a peer, and one of them was introduced to trophy hunting by a younger person who was not a peer.
There were an estimated 31,000 trophy hunters in Zimbabwe between 1997 and 2009, and the research team recorded the presence of at least ten trophy hunters per block at any given time. This suggests a large number of trophy hunters, as most blocks had several hunters. However, the research team was only able to identify hunters using an official hunter's name and this means that hunters would be missed if their name was misspelled. There were an estimated 1,500 people involved in the major lion hunts in Zimbabwe between 1995 and 1999, of whom approximately 70 were trophy hunters (Kruger National Park 1994).
Three of the lion trophy hunters identified by the research team had been involved in lion hunts before they joined the company that introduced them to trophy hunting. Each of the lion hunters had been introduced to trophy hunting by another person who had also been involved in the company that introduced them. One of the lion hunters had met the person who had introduced them to trophy hunting before, but had not been introduced to trophy hunting by that person. The other two lion hunters had been introduced to trophy hunting by a friend of a friend of the person who had introduced them to trophy hunting.
