New for the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Hockey insert program are Goalie Nightmares (1:8) and Super Colossal (1:12). Goalie Nightmares are two-players at the end of the alphabet (A and B) and they come with all four goalies. In an interesting twist, the A and B goalies will be the same ones in two of the four packs (2/4), but the two goalies in the other two packs will be different. Super Colossal is an oversized relic from the New York Yankees set and is the second member of its group (after the 2016 NFL SP). All six members of the group are 2:1. They are all printed in limited colors, like the 2016 MLB SP. Goalie Nightmares are a 2:1 and they are the second member of their group, but the first member is a 2:1 too. It also means there are two of the six members in each hobby case (4/6).
Long-time Upper Deck Series One Hockey collectors will know that because there are only six autographs in each set, there will be fewer autographs available in 2016-17 than other Upper Deck hockey sets. This can be compared to the six autographs in the 2016 Upper Deck Series One Hockey Hobby boxes and the six autographs in the 2016 Upper Deck Series One Hockey hobby boxes. Because there are six inserts in each set, the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Hockey Hobby boxes will have 12 inserts, while the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Hockey Leafcutter Fantasy Pro Draft and Leafcutter Draft Fantasy Draft packs will have nine inserts. As a result, there will be a fair amount of overlap between the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Hockey Hobby boxes, the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Hockey Leafcutter Fantasy Pro Draft and Leafcutter Draft Fantasy Draft packs.
The team will begin play in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) after the two-year agreement with the Toronto Maple Leafs was agreed to on October 26, 2016. The Marlies will be affiliated with the Maple Leafs through 2023. The Marlies will play at the 3,000-seat Budweiser Gardens.
“We are honoured and proud to be named the Marlies,” said William Nylander, the Leafs' first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. “The Marlies have been a big part of my early hockey career and I am excited to continue my professional career there. It is a perfect fit for the Leafs, the Marlies and the community.”
