In this paper, we propose a conceptual model of subsea pipeline corrosion and its free span deformation. Subsea pipelines were generally considered to be homogeneous in previous studies. It is known that the formation of subsea pipeline free spans can lead to pipeline corrosion. In this study, a realistic model of subsea pipeline with different geometries and configurations is established. We use it to simulate the pipeline deformation caused by seabed scours and predict corrosion of the pipeline. We also present a quantitative model of corrosion that takes the hydraulic drag effect into account. The results show that the pipeline is more prone to corrosion when it is located in a seabed area with a strong background scour. The corrosion intensity increases with the intensity of scour, the distance from the backwater line, and the length of the pipeline.
This paper briefly describes the basic principle of the integrated surveying system, presents the survey results, discusses the influencing factors of free spans, and discusses the theoretical analysis and the reliability of the results.
The distinct free span patterns are observed, thus making it possible to locate the pipeline at the dangerous areas which usually cause the most severe consequences. In this study, the imaging results of seabed formation process provide a reliable reference for future subsea pipe replacement.
