Hodne victimized players, and there were dozens of them. "I believe that there are about 30 that had a bad experience with him in one way or another," said Curtis "Buck" Norwood, captain of the Penn State team that year. He recalled one incident in which Hodne was bothering a Penn State freshman who had joined the team only a couple of weeks before.
"I looked at his index cards, and I thought, Wow, the guy's sharp," recalled Ralf McMorris, a lineman on the team. "He had been around a lot of football players before, college players, pro players. He seemed to have a true genius" for memorizing names and faces.
Hodne’s mind for faces was not limited to football players. "He would say, @@@@, wink at you, and one of you would probably go, @@@,@@, and then he would go back to thumbing his index cards," recalled Matt Arndt, a tight end on the team. Penn State teammate Adam "Milkman" Webber, himself a two-time Heisman Trophy winner and future professional NFL lineman, said, "Todd Hodne was a very smart, athletic guy. He was an @@@, and he was a cutter, an efficient cutter. He was not a guy who was going to make many drops, but when he did, he'd just cut you to shreds. He was one of those guys that, if my journey is any indicator, he's one of the best. The guy could read defenses like a book. It's an astonishing thing." d2c66b5586
