The ZIP code is a five- or six-digit numeric identifier, assigned to each postal delivery point. The first letter is required, followed by four digits, but the five-digit ZIP code should be used for the single letter post offices with delivery points located in very densely populated cities and only. The six-digit ZIP code is allowed for the remaining post offices.
Instant ZIP codes (see below) are usually or occasionally used in areas of high traffic. The first two digits of the ZIP code are commonly known as the "A-prefix." Some postal codes such as two A's, three A's or 1A, are also used when the number of alphanumeric characters in the postal code exceeds six as a closing symbol for the lengthy number.
In December 2001, Canada Post implemented the use of eight-digit ZIP codes for its website and mail delivery service. When the ZIP code field is not filled in, the postal code is printed. It is unusual but not unheard for a physical address to have more than six digits. d2c66b5586
