In audio recording, for example, when working on a CD, you usually work with the same tempo and pitch for all the pieces on a CD. If youre working on an album, you might take one song and speed it a fraction of a tempo; you might take another song and slow it down a quarter of a tempo; you might take another song and speed it up a little, and so on. You might even take one song and slow it down a lot, and play the whole album that way. In writing a screenplay or a book or a film, you need to take these very individual pieces not just one of these things, a whole, a bit of each, but in fact, when approached as a whole, everything needs to be changed, the whole thing, the whole thing, with another tempo, with a slower tempo, with a faster tempo, adding some pieces and cutting some pieces. And thats what I was for my first film. I believe I am the first writer, and perhaps there have been other film writers, perhaps there were many who have been writing for television, but I believe I was the first to write what we would now call a film. An action film that was in most respects like a novel with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
I remember around the same time my brother was taking martial arts lessons. I became aware that martial arts is all about timing, and there is a basis for an action film in a martial arts film. Ill have that as the base for my storytelling. Ill have an action hero, Bruce Lee, and I will come up with a situation that will make him look good, and Ill tell a story about him. Ill come up with a situation where he gets trained by our character, a teacher, and then comes up against our villain, who is possibly a street gang. Ill have a big fight in a fight scene. The fight scene goes on for a minute or two. Bruce Lee is between blows of the villain over and over. And then the villain suddenly turns and kicks him, and Bruce Lee is knocked down. But he doesnt stay down. He comes back up and he hits the villain. He comes up repeatedly and hits the villain. d2c66b5586
